In-House Fulfilment vs 3PLS

As your ecommerce business grows, so does the complexity of fulfilment. But is keeping everything in-house still the right approach, or is it time to consider a 3PL?

  1. What in-house fulfilment means

In-house fulfilment is exactly what it sounds like. You store your own stock, pack your own orders, and manage your own shipping, either from your own warehouse or a room that used to be something else before it filled up with boxes.

For a lot of brands, this is where things start. It's hands-on, you're close to every order, and you don't have to explain your product to anyone. But as volume grows, the cracks tend to show. You're now managing storage space, hiring and training a packing team, negotiating your own courier rates, and trying to keep on top of returns, all while still trying to run the actual business. Fulfilment stops being a task and starts being a full-time job on top of your full-time job.

  1. What a 3PL actually does for you?

A third-party logistics provider, or 3PL, takes that whole operation off your plate. You send your stock to their warehouse, and they handle storage, picking, packing, and dispatch on your behalf. Good couriers get booked because the 3PL already has the relationships and rates in place, and returns get processed without you having to open every parcel yourself.

The trade-off is that you're handing over a part of the customer experience to someone else. Which is exactly why choosing the right 3PL matters so much. A bad one can damage the relationship you've built with your customers just as easily as a good one can strengthen it.

  1. Is it time to switch?

This is where we come in. FULFIL.X operates as your fulfilment partner, running picking, packing, and dispatch out of our Manchester warehouse, with a global partner network that extends into Dubai, Australia, the USA and the Netherlands for brands that need to reach beyond the UK.

We built our own warehouse management system specifically because off the shelf tools weren't giving our clients the visibility they needed. That system is what lets us hit a same-day dispatch cutoff of 2pm and maintain a pick accuracy of 99.94%, and it's also what gives you real-time visibility into your own stock and orders, rather than having to email someone and wait.

We work across 28+ platform integrations and 20+ courier partners, so whether you're selling on Shopify, through Amazon FBA, or across multiple channels at once, your fulfilment can flex around how you actually sell, not the other way round.

  1. How we're different from a general 3PL

Here's the honest bit. A lot of 3PLs promise speed and flexibility, but plenty of growing brands tell us the same story: they signed up feeling like a priority client, and within a few months they were just another account number at a warehouse that had bigger fish to worry about.

That's the exact experience we have built FULFIL.X to avoid. We don't lock clients into long contracts that make switching painful, because we'd rather earn your business every month than trap you into it. If you have a question or an issue, you're not waiting days for a reply buried in a support queue.

Our response time is 2 minutes, because when something goes wrong with an order, that's not the moment you want to be left waiting. We refuse to offer the general standard, we’re not just a 3PL, we offer bespoke logistics built for you, dedicated account management, AI powered tech and so much more.

Whether you're a growing brand feeling the strain of doing everything yourself, or a scaling business that's outgrown a 3PL that no longer has time for you, the underlying question is the same. Does your fulfilment partner actually feel like a partner, or just a warehouse with your stock in it?

If you're weighing up in-house versus outsourced fulfilment, or you've been burned by a 3PL that stopped paying attention once you signed, we're always happy to talk it through, no pressure, no lock-in. The important thing is choosing the approach that gives you the time, flexibility, and confidence to focus on building your business.
